Learning Disabilities Don't Define Intelligence | ADHD & Dyslexia

If your child has ADHD, dyslexia, or another learning disability, I want you to know something important:
Struggling in school does not mean your child isn't intelligent. And a learning disability does not determine what your child is capable of becoming.
I know this professionally.
But more importantly, I know it personally.
I teach calculus. I teach essay writing. I help struggling students learn how to study, organize themselves, prepare for tests, write papers, and tackle subjects they once believed they simply weren't good at.
But when I was 13, school became incredibly difficult for me.
I had terrible dyslexia. I also have ADHD.
I wasn't incapable of learning.
I had not yet figured out how I learned.
And there is an enormous difference between those two things.

What Is a Learning Disability?
A learning disability can affect the way someone receives, processes, organizes, remembers, or communicates information.
Dyslexia, for example, can make reading and language-based tasks significantly more difficult. ADHD can affect attention, executive functioning, working memory, organization, impulse control, and the ability to initiate and complete tasks.
But here's what parents need to understand:
These challenges are not measurements of intelligence.
A child can be exceptionally bright and still struggle to read.
A student can understand advanced mathematical concepts and still forget to turn in homework.
A teenager can have incredible ideas and stare at a blank document for an hour because they don't know how to organize those ideas into an essay.
When we confuse a student's performance with their potential, we can dramatically underestimate them.

I Had Severe Dyslexia.
Today, I Teach Calculus and Essay Writing.
At 13, learning was incredibly difficult for me.
I had to work harder than many of the students around me.
And yes, that was frustrating.
But eventually I discovered something that has shaped the way I teach students today:
Working harder isn't always the answer. Sometimes you have to learn differently.
I started discovering tricks, strategies, systems, and methods that worked with my brain instead of constantly fighting against it.
When I found something that helped me, I kept doing it.
I learned how I remembered information.
I learned how I needed to approach difficult material.
I learned strategies for compensating for the things that were harder for me.
Most importantly, I stopped assuming that because something was difficult for me, I couldn't become good at it.
Today, I teach two subjects that seem almost contradictory for someone who once struggled so severely with dyslexia: calculus and essay writing.
That's exactly why I want parents to be careful about deciding what a struggling child will or won't eventually be capable of doing.
Thirteen-year-old me wasn't a finished product.
Neither is your child.
Learning Differently Does Not Mean Learning Less
This is one of my biggest frustrations with the way people sometimes discuss neurodivergent students.
I hear people—often people who have never experienced a learning difference themselves—talk about ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities almost as though they are diseases that prevent someone from being "normal."
That mindset can be incredibly limiting.
Yes, learning disabilities create real challenges.
I'm not suggesting we pretend otherwise.
There were things that were genuinely harder for me. There were times I had to put in considerably more effort. Students with learning differences may need accommodations, specialized instruction, intervention, additional time, technology, or professional support.
But needing support is very different from lacking ability.
A diagnosis can help explain why a child is struggling.
It should not become a prediction of how far that child can go.

Many Brilliant Minds Learn Differently
Intelligence has never come in one standard package.
Neurodivergent people can be scientists, entrepreneurs, writers, mathematicians, artists, physicians, engineers, educators, executives, and innovators.
Some may struggle with tasks other people find easy while excelling at things other people find extraordinarily difficult.
That's something I wish more struggling students understood.
The kid who can't remember where they put their homework may also be capable of understanding an incredibly complicated concept.
The child struggling to read aloud may have remarkable ideas.
The teenager whose backpack looks like a tornado went through it might eventually build a company.
A weakness in one area does not cancel out strengths in another.
And today's weakness doesn't necessarily have to remain tomorrow's weakness.
Skills can be developed.
Strategies can be learned.
Systems can be created.
Confidence can be rebuilt.

Parents: Don't Lower the Ceiling. Change the Strategy.
When a child repeatedly struggles, it's natural for a parent to want to protect them.
But there is a difference between providing support and unintentionally teaching a child that they are incapable.
Instead of immediately asking:
"How can we make this easier?"
Sometimes we should ask:
"How can we make this work for your brain?"
That could mean experimenting with:
visual learning and diagrams
breaking assignments into smaller steps
timers and structured work periods
movement while studying
different note-taking techniques
memory tricks and mnemonics
audiobooks or text-to-speech tools
organizational systems
repetition and spaced practice
changing the study environment
learning how and when to ask for help
executive-function strategies for planning and starting assignments
There isn't one magic strategy for every student with ADHD, dyslexia, or another learning difference.
That's the point.
We need to help students discover their strategies.
The Most Important Thing I Learned Was How to Learn
This is the philosophy behind everything I do as the Anti-Tutor.
Traditional tutoring often focuses on the immediate problem:
Let's finish the math worksheet.
Let's get tonight's essay done.
Let's study for Friday's test.
Those things matter.
But I'm much more interested in what happens when the tutor isn't sitting there.
What does the student do when they get stuck?
Can they break down an assignment?
Do they know how to study?
Can they organize their thoughts?
Can they recognize when a strategy isn't working and try another one?
Can they advocate for themselves?
Do they understand their own strengths and weaknesses?
Ultimately, I don't want a student to become dependent on tutoring.
I want them to become an expert on their own brain.
What I Want a Struggling Student to Hear
If you're a student with ADHD, dyslexia, or another learning difference, I want you to hear this from someone who has been there:
Something being difficult for you does not mean you aren't intelligent.
Needing more repetition doesn't make you stupid.
Needing a different explanation doesn't make you difficult.
Taking longer doesn't mean you won't get there.
And struggling today does not tell us what you'll be capable of five, ten, or twenty years from now.
At 13, school was incredibly difficult for me.
Today, I teach calculus and essay writing.
The difference wasn't that someone magically changed my brain.
I learned how to work with it.
I found the tricks, strategies, routines, and methods that helped me succeed, and I stuck with them.
That experience eventually became the foundation of how I teach other students.
Your Child Is More Than Their Diagnosis

I am living proof.
And after years of working with struggling students, I have seen over and over again what can happen when we stop focusing exclusively on what a student can't do and start helping them discover how they can do it.
